L'art de ralentir | L'importance du repos avant la naissance

In the final weeks of pregnancy, it’s common to feel the urge to “get everything done.” Nesting instincts kick in, to-do lists grow longer, and the calendar can quickly fill with last-minute errands, work tasks, and social plans.

But what if, instead of speeding up, this is the time to slow down? Here’s why putting your feet up in the last few weeks before birth isn’t lazy – it’s wise, essential, and powerful self-care.

You're Building up for a Big Moment

Labour and birth require immense physical, emotional, and energetic resources. It’s like preparing for a marathon, except you don’t get a fixed start time or a clear finish line. Conserving your energy in the lead-up means your body has the reserves it needs when it’s time to birth your baby – and that energy will be just as crucial in the weeks after birth, too.

You’re Not Just Growing a Baby - You’re Growing into a New You

The transition into motherhood (or motherhood again) is profound. Slowing down gives your body and nervous system a chance to shift gears – out of doing, planning, and organising – and into being. Rest makes space for your mind and heart to catch up with what’s about to unfold. Embrace those last few weeks of being pregnant.

Rest Is Preparation, Not Inactivity

Putting your feet up doesn’t mean doing nothing. It means doing what truly supports you:

  • Napping during the day if your body asks for
  • Soaking in a warm bath
  • Listening to calming music or meditations
  • Getting a massage or acupuncture
  • Journaling, reading, or simply lying with your hands on your belly
These quiet moments nourish your nervous system, calm adrenaline, and strengthen the parasympathetic response – an essential state for birth and bonding.

The Early Postpartum Period Is Demanding - You’ll Be Glad You Stored Energy

Those first weeks with your newborn will be filled with love, awe, and learning – but they’ll also ask a lot of you physically and emotionally. Giving yourself permission to rest now is one of the most loving things you can do for your future self. Ensuring you provide the best support for yourself is essential, alongside your prenatal care.

Give Yourself Full Permission

It’s okay to say no to extra commitments. It’s okay to step back from work earlier than planned. It’s okay to ask for help or delegate. This is not a pause in life – this is life, unfolding in one of its most sacred seasons. Allow your body to take all the relaxation it needs to gently prepare for labour and delivery.

So please, put your feet up. Breathe deeply. You are not falling behind – you’re preparing for one of the biggest, most beautiful journeys of all.
