Acupuncture is beneficial throughout your pregnancy, but there are two particular times that I highly recommend coming.
1. From the moment you confirm your pregnancy until your 12-week scan
It’s a time when outwardly, you may appear unchanged, but inwardly, you feel vastly different. Between the overwhelming tiredness, nausea, sickness, and the constant questioning of “am I still pregnant today?” or “why am I feeling these cramps?”, coupled with the reluctance to share the news with anyone, be it family or employer, you’re navigating a significant change in your body all on your own. That’s a lot to handle.
That’s why acupuncture sessions are invaluable during this period. We’re here to alleviate the sickness and fatigue, to address the fears and anxieties, and to acknowledge that this journey is a big deal, offering our unwavering support every step of the way.
2. When you are 36 weeks pregnant!
Coming weekly from 36 weeks until the birth of the baby is the optimal timing. The purpose of these weekly sessions is to help women prepare themselves to have the most efficient labour possible, reduce time spent in labour, and lower the rate of medical intervention.
These sessions also address typical problems such as hypertension, insomnia, heartburn, and emotional issues like frustration, fear, and anxiety.
It’s an excellent opportunity for us, acupuncturists, to provide advice on rest, regular physical activity, and maintaining emotional balance. Additionally, it allows for discussions about the use of acupressure points in labour for pain relief.
